I very much enjoyed this book. The writing was nicely done. The world building was good and I thought the character development was excellent. I am looking forward to the next book in the trilogy.

A young boy named Albert, is visiting his dad when he discovers that he is to be a Balance Keeper. As a balance keeper, each child is to swim to the bottom of a lake and pick whatever tile speaks to them. These tiles have symbols on them that tells each child what powers they are to have. Albert comes away with a very rare tile, but no one seems to know what it means or what power it bestows on its owner.

As training begins, Albert finds himself doing things he didn't know he could do, and attributes it to his tile, though he has no idea how it works. As the story goes on, they put the pieces together as to how his tile works and the adventure begins.

Before long, Albert and his team, (Hydra) are called upon to save the world. They must go to the underground realm, Calderon, and risk their lives to restore balance to the realm before it destroys the world.

I've been reading a lot of the children's and teen books lately and I can say that this is finally one that I would actually let my granddaughter read. I liked it.

I had been missing the feeling I got when reading a middle grade book about magic and mystery like I felt with the Harry Potter series. I was pleased to see that Cummings was able to create this alternate world and make it work. I immediately felt drawn to Albert, Birdie, and Leroy and enjoyed reading about their first adventures as Balance Keepers. I cannot wait for book two!
In the beginning of The Fires of Calderon, I have to admit I was a little antsy and a little bored. The summary seemed a little bland too. But I picked up the book anyway because of the other book Lindsay wrote, The Murder Complex, was simply astounding.

As I began to read the adventures of Albert, Leroy, and Birdie, I thought it was nice for the main character to have friends and not be alone. (I also thought the names were a little weird xD.) Anyway as I continued to read the book, I started to really really enjoy it. The plot started to thicken around Albert and his friends and I got sucked in and really interested. I love all the little details about the Core and all its magic there. It really seems to be a fun world.

However I also thought the plot was a little too quick for my tastes. The trio suddenly went to the Fires of Calderon and completed their mission rather quickly. I would've liked if there were more details to the parts when they were in Calderon. I felt as if major scenes were just squished into a couple of pages.

Overall I really enjoyed the book and thought it was splendid. I anticipate reading The Pillars of Ponderay and soon!
