This is a sweet book with funny illustrations. My 5 year old requests me to read it over and over. The story is simple - both the bear and his neighbor the bunny decide to grow tomatoes one summer. Bear works hard in his garden, weeding, digging, carefully planting while bunny takes the lazy approach to gardening by just throwing the seeds out to fend for themselves. Both end up with buckets full of tomatoes - only because Bear has been kind enough to share his bounty with his neighbor, who got not one tomato to grow. Fun, colorful illustrations with humor make this a fun read for parents and children alike. The morals of hard work and sharing make the book a treasure.
I know some people dislike this book because it appears to condone laziness. And while Bunny certainly takes the low stress path in life and is willing to be the beneficiary of someone else's generosity, it would be wrong to throw this on the pyre. My take on The Chimpanzees Of Happytown--which I liked, with reservations--was that of a ruling class power struggle. In the same lit crit fashion, I could have gone all anti-socialism here and railed against collective farming. But I won't.

Bruce Koscielniak has fashioned an appealing if little known book that teaches some good lessons and, most importantly, shares the priceless gift of friendship. Bear works hard and is rewarded with a full harvest, there's no denying that. He kindly offers some extra tomatoes to his friend Bunny. (It would be rude to refuse.) Bunny may be negligent in his own agricultural chores, but the relationship is far from one-sided; earlier, he invites Bear to a pool party. One senses that Bear and Bunny are longtime neighbors who have grown to accept each others' company that Bear is not surprised at Bunny's lifestyle ratio of work-to-play.

"I do have a tomato garden. I just can't find it. But when I do, the tomatoes are sure to be colossal." --Bunny

Bear and Bunny Grow Tomatoes certainly does teach some lessons. In addition to teaching that kindness is a worthwhile virtue and that friends can be friends even if they have different outlooks and habits, it teaches that gardening is not for the faint of heart (or back!).

This hardback is library-binding quality. I think it would easily survive a rainy night in the garden, and certainly a spot in your child's bookcase.

(Umbrella Books was a series of children's books Knopf published in 1993, perhaps so named for their reinforced bindings and heavy-duty covers, the better to withstand young hands and errant sneezes. True to the name, this book might even survive a rainy night in the garden!)
I had concerns with the delivery of my order and Jade was very patient in clarifying the issue. I received the book the very next day, still well within the parameter of expected delivery time. I will do business with him in the future as my needs as a special education teacher dictates.

Some criticize the book because Bear is irresponsible and does not produce a crop - instead he relies in Bunny to cover for him. Still, I think the
story is adorable. Bunny shares out of the goodness of her heart.
We read this book every night for weeks and weeks. Definitely a house favorite!
I love this book! Very funny text, delightful pictures, and gentle way of showing hard work and diligence. This is one of those books that kids go around quoting for years.
