Alpine for You is the first book in the Passport to Peril mystery series. This is a pleasant cozy mystery that kept my attention from beginning to end. The author has developed a delightful protagonist and a fun group of secondary characters. Emily's grandmother cracked me up. The dialogue made me smile, chuckle, and laugh out loud frequently. I love humor in my mysteries, and this book didn't disappoint.

With the development of eBooks, authors are now able to introduce their earlier works to a whole new group of readers. I'm so glad Ms. Hunter decided to do so with this delightful series. I'm always excited when I find a new-to-me author; especially one who has already published additional books in a series--that means no waiting for the next book! The eighth book in this series, Bonnie of Evidence, is due out in February. I'm looking forward to reading all of the books in this wonderfully amusing series (even the titles are funny!). I've just downloaded Top O' the Mournin' (Emily and the seniors get to visit Ireland in this one) and can't wait to start reading it. This book is loads of fun. Emily Andrews, a young woman escorting a group of senior citizens from Iowa (including her grandmother) on a tour of Switzerland, isn't quite prepared for the murderous turn the tour takes. She hasn't planned to be in charge of anything...and wouldn't be if the original escort hadn't died the first night the tour arrived in Switzerland, leaving her effectively holding the bag (that would be the bag with all the seniors' medications in it). Much hilarity ensues before the mystery is solved.

I had a great time reading this. It's easy and quick. Fluffy, even. So don't expect a serious mystery novel or you'll be sadly disappointed. A couple of reviewers have said that they were turned off by the portrayal of Switzerland in this book. If the characterizations here were to turn up in a serious novel, I'd agree with them. But slapstick--and make no mistake, that's what this is--has a different ethos. Exaggeration is the name of the game and Switzerland, Iowa, actors and senior citizens are all larger-than-life and twice as stereotyped.
It's difficult not to compare the two -- Evanovich has a heroine who has bad luck with cars, Hunter has a heroine who has bad luck with water. The parallels go on and on -- both involve madcap comedy combined with mystery. Although I think Evanovich does it better, I still found myself laughing out loud at places in this book. They mystery wasn't very much of a mystery, but the location in Switzerland added to the appeal of the book, and her humor about tourists in Europe was pretty funny (taking photos in the fog, for example).
The plot involves a tour group of seniors from Iowa who are in Lucerne in the off-season. Our young heroine is with her grandmother, the youngest by far on this tour. There is a death of one of the tour group members -- a Lothario who has slept with half the middle aged and older women in town, and some of them are on this trip. A drop-dead sexy Swiss police detective is investigating this death (and others that follow), and of course are heroine's knees turn to jelly every time he walks in the room.
This is a "fun" book rather than great literature. I will read more books (this is the first of a proposed series) but will wait until they come out in paperback -- hence the four stars rather than the five I'd give Evanovich.
If you enjoy funny mysteries this is the book for you. The heroine is a 30ish divorcee who is a tour guide for a group of seniors in Switzerland.

Maddy Hunter has a delightful writing style, with a tremendous sense of humor that shows up on almost every page. Yet her mysteries are compact, well written and intriguing. And the body count on each tour rises alarmingly.

In this one one of the seniors dies in a suspicious way, introducing the heroine's love interest, a handsome and charming homicide police detective. As the body count rises so does the interest for each other grow between the guide and the policeman.

A truly enjoyable romp through Switzerland and the problems of escorting senior citizens on a tour of an European country. I sincerely and happily encourage you to read this book! And the rest of the series as well.
Alpine for You is a hilarious travel mystery. Maddy Hunter is a delightful satirist, and nothing's safe from her! Even Emily, the main character gets poked fun of. I started reading this series with "Norway to Hide" and got such a kick out of it that I wanted to start at the beginning. I had to order the first in the series, "Alpine for You," secondhand, but the copy I got was like new, and it cost only one penny. I had to know how the story all began. Emily is a very lovable protagonist and can handle any situation. Although, by the end of each of the books, I am left with the feeling that I wouldn't want to travel to any of the places Emily takes her senior citizen group. The accommodations at the hotel where they stay in Switzerland are horrible, and the food is awful. The mystery is full of suspense, and there is a delightful romance (a Swiss detective falls for Emily). I highly recommend this series for some wonderful laughs and vicarious travel.
