One of the more unusual in the vampire/romance/mystery genre' I have read in quite some time "Forsaken" by Brenda Weis Coffman captivates and entertains without the need for sparkle or the taming of the vampire lore.

Opening with the one of several main protagonist, Jesse is a dishwasher in a small town cafe'. Seemingly a normal late teen Jesse is not what he appears to be. Alone, cut off from society and living in a fantasy world Jesse leads the reader on a roller coaster ride while we try to understand what is motivating this seemingly normal person to do such abnormal things.

But Jesse is not the only one in town with a secret. In fact, someone else is stalking the people of the surrounding community and only two people know the secret of his existence. The town mayor, herself a former lover of this creature of the night, and his paid assistant keep his secrets while exposing themselves and their neighbors to vampire horror.

With two killers in their midst can the town survive?

Well written, complex and compelling this is a novel that will keep the reader engaged from the first paragraph to the last.

Forsaken Brenda Weis Coffman 9781479184736 Books Reviews

I expected to go a few pages and drop it.
They're not all the same. Tastes like chicken, they say, but
it depends on your life-experience. She's got a certain
way she moves. Attracts me like Passion Fish.
Yummy. Ow! Stop it! Don't! Stop! Don't Stop! Yes! Ow!
Picked up the paperback at the local Half Price Books because I thought it was a sequel to http//www./The-Timeliner-Doug-Rains/dp/1492333972 due to using the same photo on the cover. It wasn't the sequel I had hoped for, but I gave it a chance and read through it. I cannot, in good conscience, recommend this book to anyone unless you really like B movies. At least the $0.25 cost won't make you feel ripped off.

The story has a good premise, but is so lacking in building up more than 1 or 2 characters that it feels like a sequel. It's not a bad story, but it's not a good story either. The only character that has substance to them is the serial killer, Jesse Hawkins. I assume the author has read Jeff Lindsay's "Darkly Dreaming Dexter" and other novels in that series, as the serial killer in this book is somewhat familiar. If you are looking for a good book that includes serial killers, I recommend looking elsewhere. If you prefer the supernatural, this book does follow in the footsteps of several vampire stories that preceded it. The vampire in this book is not like the recent sparkly, romanticized vampires, and at the same time is not a dark, intense vampires in older stories - he sits somewhere in the middle.

In the end, this story leaves open several possibilities for sequels. I'm sure the author has gotten better with age so future works could be commendable and receive better reviews. Remember, we review books, not authors - so don't hold this book against her when you see any of her other works.
I loved, loved loved this novel and has high hopes that there will be a sequel coming shortly. The mixture of reality and the supernatural in a whimsical mystery was like a genre-party but it definitely worked.

Once I started I hesitated to put it down just because I needed (not wanted) to know what happened next. Very suspenseful but not scary whatsoever, I would definitely recommend the novel to others. It is worth the read and the recommendation to others, hopefully a sequel will be forthcoming soon because I am excited - I think that it can be turned into a series truthfully - it does have the makings!
