It took me 4 days to finish this story...it was that much of a yawner. Spies, CIA, murders, kidnapping, bioweapons, Mexican drug cartels...lots of serious subjects happening in this story, and happening fast with no depth. Too much going on to tie it tightly together succinctly. The story started out well but quickly decelerated. I never felt the suspense or importance or fear that one should feel with the serious subject matter. Each suspenseful moment ended quickly. Ms. Reus would build it up nicely, and instead of milking it, she'd end it leaving an anticlimactic feeling. The dialogue wasn't believable of CIA spies or hardened drug cartel members. Sometimes it was downright corny vernacular. I didn't feel a romantic connection between the two main characters, Colt and Skye. I never engaged or connected to them...their relationship needed more time and details. There was no solid backstory of them...it trickled in. Too little too late. The story isn't shown or doesn't unfold naturally...rather it's told to the reader. The character details are weak and seldom ever reiterated, so being a reader of 3-4 books a week, I quickly lost what little visual I had of the main characters. More suspense and action than romance. Very little adult language. The HEA was rushed with a blindingly obvious and predictable set-up for the next story. This author would do better to flesh out one direction of subject matter instead of throwing in so much..ie; (drug cartel, kidnapping, faked death, stolen weapons etc.) Pick one and flesh it out. More adolescent, PG13 writing.

With being named after the gun, there is nothing he can't handle except maybe a red headed little lady. Spoiler Alert. Colts girlfriend Skye has just tied and his childhood friend Mercer wife Mary Grace has died also, so if Colts a little maybe a lot off his game of spying which is what he does for the government. So he gets word that Mary Grace might be alive but kidnapped. But before he goes and check the rumors he has to go whip (yep he has to kick his ass) his buddy Mercer into shape 😁. Mercer is in a deep depression over his wife the love of his life. Well before Colt can go to find and rescue Mary Grace he has to do whatever needs to be done to help Mercer back in to shape. So he whips his ass and goes to rescue Mary Grace only to find out Skyes not dead either and she's single handedly rescued Mary Grace. Skye faked her death to protect the man she loves and his friends who are his family. Of course there's a reason why Mary Grace was kidnapped and why Skye faked her death and Colt will not stop until he knows who and why this happened, and do whatever it takes to fix it for everyone.
I have loved Katie Reus’s books for quite a while now; this is a new series for her, and I freaking love it! I already can't wait for the next book to come out! This has everything I want in a romantic suspense book…a great storyline, 2 kickass main characters, as well as a whole bunch of secondary characters, also kickass, who are just waiting for their story to be told. Skye and Colt are CIA agents who loved each other, but circumstances deemed it necessary for Skye to “die”. Colt was devastated until he finds out that she faked her death. I am glad Ms.Reus did not drag out that part of the book, but quickly informed us as to who Skye was running from and getting Colt and friends involved. Overall, this was a fun story and I'm very glad to be able to say I loved it and am waiting for the next in this series. Thanks as always to Netgalley and the publisher for allowing me to read this for an honest review.

QUICK REVIEW
A great action-packed debut to the new Redemption Harbor series. I really enjoyed how tough and feisty Skye was and all the sacrifices she made to protect the man she loves. Though Colt's quick forgiveness might not be the most realistic, I'm glad there was a lack of drama in that area. I look forward to reading about the others in this group of friends.

CHARACTERS
Skye Arévalo Faking her death and giving up everything was an easy choice for Skye when it meant protecting Colt from her blackmailer. But she never expected to come face to face with him and now that she has, she needs to find a way to protect him.

Colt Stuart Losing first his partner/lover and then one of his best friends, is almost more than Colt can bear. But when he hears a rumor that his friend might still be alive, he goes after her. He never expected someone would beat him to rescuing her, especially when that someone is supposed to be dead.

POSITIVES
-- Skye was a great heroine who can take care of herself, kick some butt, and is willing to do anything for those she cares about. I loved watching her blow things up and take out the bad guys.

-- The drama was pretty minimal in this one and I liked that. Colt is hurt and upset when he first finds Skye again, but since they're both in the spy world, he understands her choices. He forgives her pretty quickly and is just thankful to have her back.

-- Mercer and Mary Grace's reunion was so sweet and heart warming. I can't imagine losing the love of your life and then finding them again. They're a really cute couple and I admit in the beginning, that I was more interested in their story than Skye and Colt.

-- The side characters were all great and I look forward to getting their stories.

NEGATIVES
-- Small thing but because this was the first in the series, there was a lot of set up for the future books. Katie Reus does a pretty good job of weaving in hints about their stories and history but it is a lot of characters to learn about.

-- This isn't out of the norm for romantic suspense, but there was an awful lot of disregard for laws going on in this book. Now most of the guys getting killed were dangerous, bad guys but I just wanted to include it. This group of friends definitely has no problem letting the end justify the means.
